Heath At Every Size® Curriculum Development
Skill Area: Curriculum Development/Nutrition Education
Assignment Title: Heath At Every Size® Curriculum (www.haescurriculum.com)
What I learned: During this project, I worked closely with a registered dietitian as lead curriculum developers and a team of editors. We created a needs assessment to determine what settings our curriculum would be best used in, how long the curriculum should be and what would be useful to include. This curriculum includes: PowerPoint presentations with notes, pre-recorded lectures, resource list, assignment ideas, exam questions and an audience feedback survey. I co-presented this research at the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior and learned valuable public speaking skills.
Reflection to assignment: It was an honor to be selected by my advisor to work on this year-long project with her. This projected allowed me the time to delve into the research behind Health At Every Size® (HAES®) and present this research in an easy to understand manner that engages audiences. In August 2013, I co-presented this curriculum at a national conference; this experience while challenging was one I will never forget. During this conference, I was able to share my personal journey learning about HAES and what it meant to me. The involvement that I have had on this project has fueled my passion for nutrition, overall health and the HAES paradigm.
Relevance to the profession: This project is relevant to the profession because health care professionals should be examining new research on a regular basis. As we examine this research we will be called upon to present this information to others in multiple formats.
