Assignment Title: Parental attitudes and restrictions during childhood and the effect on adulthood eating habits (Qualitative Research)
What I learned: This assignment taught me how to conduct a qualitative research study. This study was accomplished by conducting interviews, collecting data, interpreting data, and to drawing conclusions within my research.
Reflection to assignment: This assignment gave me further insight to the topic of my honors nutrition project. This assignment was done over the course of the semester, so it taught me to prioritize my work and effectively manage my time. While time consuming, surveying individuals was worth the effort. It allowed me to gain a personal perspective on childhood eating habits and how those habits affects people as they grow into adulthood. I found that while parental restrictions can have a negative effect on eating habits in terms of feelings of restriction as an adult; a lack of parental restriction and a lack of variety can cause negative adult eating habits as well. It is important for parents to be able to find a balance and provide their children with a variety of foods.
Relevance to the profession: The ability to conduct qualitative research is important in many aspects of the profession. In order to conduct quality research one must be able to effectively speak and listen to others and to be able to extract data from conversations with others and apply that data to make informed conclusions.
